We welcome you all to the 8th edition of the Retina summit hosted by the Shri Bhagwan Mahavir Vitreoretinal service, Sankara Nethralaya, Chennai from July 9-11, 2026

This year, our theme is “Crisis Control” – recognising and managing complications of retinal procedures.

While we are fortunate to be part of the exciting innovations that have made our understanding and management of retinal disorders more gratifying, complications and unhappy outcomes remain an inevitable part of our practice.

The meeting this year will focus on complications related to commonly performed retinal procedures, including intravitreal injections, retinal lasers, and vitreoretinal surgery. Through faculty talks, videos, case-based discussions, expert panels and a session devoted to medicolegal implications we hope to encourage honest discussion and shared learning to improve patient outcomes in these challenging situations. The pre conference sessions on July 9th will be targeted towards sharing and teaching best practises to improve outcomes.

Complications are often our most valuable teachers, and discussing them openly allows us to refine our judgement and improve patient safety. Video and poster competitive sections aim to bring out the best and recognise our young colleagues.

We hope this meeting will provide a stimulating environment for learning, exchange of experience, and meaningful discussion among attendees at different stages of their careers. We look forward to your participation and hope to give you an enriching academic experience.

"

Dear friends of Retina Summit 008, knowledge grows by sharing. It is time for us to unite, participate, and engage in meaningful, in-person discussions on the management of complications in medical and surgical vitreoretinal procedures in 2026.

We began our journey with the Retina Summit in 2016, with the intention of focusing on a single theme each year. Starting with diabetic retinopathy, we have consistently concentrated on one specific disease entity annually. Over the years, this meeting has evolved into an eagerly awaited event for retina specialists far and wide.

Retina Summit 008 brings together an exceptional faculty with vast experience from India and across the globe. A surgeon who has never faced a complication is one who has not performed enough surgery. Let us be bold and direct our focus entirely on “Complications in Medical and Surgical Vitreoretinal Procedures.”

Learning to embrace adverse events and navigating challenges to restore the anatomical and functional integrity of the globe truly defines the life of a vitreoretinal surgeon.

On behalf of Sri Bhagwan Mahavir Vitreoretinal Services, Sankara Nethralaya, I will be organizing this event along with my co-organizers, Dr. Preethi P. and Dr. Raghulnadhan R.

We encourage all retina specialists to be a part of this meeting and help make it a truly memorable scientific gathering—one that you will carry back with enriching insights and practical knowledge.

The theme of Retina Summit 008 is “Crisis Control.”

We begin on July 9th with a pre-conference, followed by hands-on workshops. The pre-conference will focus on beginners in retina practice, covering the step-by-step approach to vitrectomy and scleral buckling, guided by experienced vitreoretinal surgeons. Interactive discussions with seasoned experts will be a key highlight.

Lasers and intravitreal anti-VEGF injections and steroids are lifelines for many of our patients. The when, what, and how will be explored in depth by experienced retinologists with over a decade of expertise.

The afternoon will feature hands-on sessions in intravitreal injections, laser techniques, scleral buckle suturing, peribulbar blocks, and advanced life support. “Know Your Machines” stations will focus on the finer nuances of vitrectomy machines, inverter systems, and laser delivery systems.

On July 10th and 11th, we have curated 10 focused sessions addressing complications related to scleral buckling, laser procedures, intravitreal injections, and intraocular lenses. Topics will include identification and management of intraocular infections and inflammation, recurrent retinal detachment, intraocular hemorrhages, and the use of adjuncts.

We will also provide insights into machine breakdowns and instrument failure, along with essential discussions on self-safety, medicolegal aspects, and professional indemnity.

Participants are invited to compete and win prizes through video and poster presentations. For those who prefer sharing expertise over competition, we welcome submissions of videos or cases for discussion through our portal.

Events become successful through participation. We look forward to hosting you in Chennai!
